I joined the US Navy at 17 years old. It probably saved my life. It definitely changed me forever in some ways helpful and in many ways that were not.
Each year I smile graciously when people say “Happy Veteran’s Day” or “Thank you for your service” because I understand that they are seeking to recognize and maybe even honor my sacrifice. I wonder if they knew that I’m still sacrificing each day, a price that I had no idea I would pay.
I guess that is the point right? We sign up, not knowing the price and we believe we are willing to pay it. I cannot say that I would not have joined “if only I’d known…” because in hindsight it is impossible to reconcile the trade off.
I will say this, the experience cost more than I can say and while it continues to pay dividends, it is my deepest desire that young people have, and know their options and can choose based on their own values and goals.
May all beings love and be loved.
Thank you for reading/listening. May we all have the choice to “serve” peacefully.
